Miracles are our Business

Haiti is the third poorest country in the world. The average per capita income is $1 per day. 60% of the people go to bed hungry every night; 70% are illiterate. If you are unfortunate to be born in Haiti, you have one chance in ten of dying before your first birthday, one chance in five of dying before your fifth birthday, from diseases which cost pennies to treat. Our goal is to try to make a difference.

We have discovered a small, rural hospital in Haiti, Hopital Lumiere. It has 100 beds and a few local doctors; but it is dependent on volunteers and contributions from the U.S. to continue its life-sustaining mission. We have also adopted a charismatic Haitian Episcopal priest, Father Fritz Valdema (Pere Val) and his wife Carmel. He is a Rotarian who has demonstrated his integrity and leadership skills in improving conditions for his people.

Our Accomplishments and our Vision

Fund Raising

We have established a 501C(3) tax-exempt corporation known as the Christian Haitian American Partnership (CHAP), which is committed to assist Pere Val. We have raised more than a third of a million dollars, and continue to appeal for more. Our partners in this effort include area Rotary Clubs and Rotary International, the Chapin Foundation in Myrtle Beach, churches and individuals with a big heart.

Charitable Donations

We have provided the hospital with a new truck, a new cement mixer, a new X-ray machine, a new incinerator, 3 anesthesia machines and lights for 4 operating rooms. We continually request and obtain used medical equipment and supplies which are refurbished and shipped. We have donated $1 million in medications.

Medical Missions

We have organized 5 medical teams to work at Hopital Lumiere. They are made up of doctors, nurses and lay people, who work for a week at the hospital. We have performed more than 150 surgical procedures. We have sent teams of physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and lay people to assist Pere Val and Carmel. They travel out into the countryside to remote villages that have never seen white people and have never received medical or dental care. We also bring trained and non-trained people to assist in the care of small children and babies at two hospitals with orphanages in the capital of Port-au-Prince. We recruit volunteers for future missions.

Water and Sewer

6,000 children and 30,000 adults in Third World Countries die everyday from drinking contaminated water. This is a major problem in Haiti. We have received a Rotary Matching Grant for $96,000. We are working on our first major project. We have dug a deep-water well in Croix des Bouquets. We will provide a pump, diesel generator, water tank, septic system and electricity throughout his compound.

We have received a second Rotary Matching Grant for $48,000 which will provide similar facilities for a church and school at Gorman. Private funding has been donated for a third water project at Crochu.

Nutrition

Carmel Valdema is trained as a nurse and nutritionist. She evalutates and provides care for countless starving infants and children. With AKAMIL, a mixture of ground rice and beans, she can restore famished babies to normal life. We have purchased land in Croix des Boquets for a Nutrition Center. We have raised $85,000 for the facility.

Spreading the Word

Dr. Greene has spoken to more than 100 Rotary gatherings, civic groups and churches about our mission. Rotary is all about fellowship and international cooperation. More than 2 dozen clubs in the U.S. and Haiti have partnered with us. We will continue to recruit Rotary Clubs to partner with us on our projects. Dr. Greene is available to speak on request.

We strive to show Rotarians’ love and concern for our improverished brothers and sisters. We strive to spread the Good News.
